Earlier that year a grower on the Del-Mar-Va Peninsula purchased a Red Dragon Row Crop Flaming Kit because he knew what he was up against in the fields he just rented.
PIGWEED!!!
Instead of using the normal row crop configuration of flaming through the row, the brackets and torches were configured backward, at an angle like a vegetable bed flamer.
I would have suggested the larger LT 2 x 8 torches for a broadcast flame application, instead of the LT 1 1/2 x 8D torches that are normally used in 30″ row crop spacing for cross flaming through the row, but in a fit of Farming Ingenuity this grower configured his LT 1 1/2 x 8D torches and turned the fuel pressure up to 65 p.s.i.+ and blanketed the ground with FLAME!
It was bye bye pigweed,.. till more seeds sprouted.
The growing point of the corn has emerged negating the possibility of flaming the corn back, so the solution is lowering the torches and flaming through the row, under the crop leaves as low as possible.
This torch illustrates the direction of flaming – into the row. The angle of torch should be positioned so the flame hits the ground next to the crop row and covers the ground under the row.
The pigweed in the crop row has been destroyed and there is little damage to the corn, though the leaf margins show some drying from the heat of the torches. Mechanical cultivation should take place to remove the band of pigweed that was not flamed before it goes to seed, or you can set up your row crop flamer to broadcast flame between the rows once the corn has grown a little taller.
The Red Dragon Row Crop Flamer is an effective and versatile, tool for any grower to have.
