It’s that time of year when the chemical resistant weeds exsert their ultimate resistance.
We’re talking mechanical failures and downtime!
Here are a few real life experiences shared on social media these days by growers in the throws of harvest turmoil.
“In weedy beans, the header gets full of morning glory vines and cockleburs. You have to stop every few rounds and clean it out with an air hose. It’s a pain, but better than wrapping the cylinder.”
“Worst is pigweed or waterhemp in beans. It packs under the draper belt and stops the whole header. Spent half a day once with the header flipped up, digging it out with a weed hook and compressed air.”
“Palmer amaranth (pigweed) in cotton or soybeans is nightmare fuel. It balls up in the row units and header snout. Cleanout takes forever; some guys park overnight and pressure wash the whole front end between fields.”
Flame weeding goes a long way toward achieving a smoother harvest and higher yields, no matter if you are a conventional grower with resistant weed problems, or an organic grower or transitioning to organic.
