Vineyard and Orchard Flaming
GP-Series Berm Flamers Kill Weeds, Grasses and destroy Insect Habitat without using pesticides, saving you up to 50% over other methods of weed & pest control. They are also used to remove leaves on vine canopy and an alley attachment is available to control growth between the berms.
Red Dragon GP-Series Vineyard and Orchard Flaming Equipment offers producers a variety of effective, economical and pesticide free options for their operations. Berm flaming is an effective weed & pest control method which can be applied as often as needed to keep the berm clean without damaging vines, trees, irrigation systems, vine protectors or the environment. Red Dragon GP-Series flamers burn clean, efficient propane, so there is no residue, run-off or possible ground water contamination. Flaming is an excellent method for both organic and conventional growers looking for an effective alternative to pesticides and manual labor.
A complete winter burn down can also be applied to destroy insect habitat by burning ground cover, leaves and grasses. Other applications of flaming include several vine canopy management procedures such as “skunking” for table grapes and flaming southside overhead trellis D.O.V. raisins. This allows more sunlight to the grapes and makes cane cutting easier. Nut producers can also use the Red Dragon Alfalfa Field Flamer for preharvest burn down. For more detailed information about berm flaming and its applications see our Ag Flaming Guide or our Vineyard & Orchard Flaming FAQs page.

GP-1000 Vineyard & Orchard Flamer
The GP-1000 is our largest Berm Flamer unit and is designed to hold a 124 gallon tank. It comes with everything you need to start flaming except for the tank. We recommend this unit if your operation is over 40 acres
GP-1000 Flaming in an orchard.
The GP-1000
With 124 gallon tank capacity and our new LT 6 x 18 Super Torches, the GP-1000 is perfect for larger vineyard and orchard operations. These two features combine to provide faster ground speeds and more acres covered per day. This larger unit is still much lighter than a larger tank on a trap wagon which is an important soil compaction consideration.
The GP-1000 is easily pulled behind a small tractor or a larger ATV and comes equipped with a 2″ ball and clevis hitch. The boom arms can be adjusted in length and in height and feature a spring loaded break-away system should you accidently hit a vine or tree trunk. The boom arms also conveniently pin vertically for safe and easy transport.
The GP-1000 features Powerful LT 6 x 18 Super Torches.
The LT 6 x 18 Super Torches are rated 3,000,000 BTU/hr each, and produce flames exceeding 48″ in length and 18 inches in width. This provides excellent coverage and enables the operator to flame at faster ground speeds (up to 5 m.p.h.) than when flaming with smaller burners. Fuel consumption will range from 20 to 40 gallons per hour or 4-6 gallons per acre.
Complete Control From The Driver’s Seat.
Another great feature of the GP-1000 is the operator control box which can be mounted for easy access by the operator. The electronic solenoid system allows for master shut down and control over each burner independently making the unit safe and easy to operate. This also allows the operator the option of using either one or both sides at a time.
GP-1000 FLAMING UNITS INCLUDE:
- Complete channel iron frame trailer assembly with steel tank straps and valve guard designed to carry an ASME 124 Gallon (w.c.) Tank; 24″ diameter x 70″ long.
- (Tank can be added when ordering or purchased locally from your propane supplier – *See Important Note About LP Tanks Below)
- (2) LT 6 x 18 Super Torches –
- 3,000,000 BTU/hr Each.
- Adjustable, break-away boom arm assemblies.
- Complete Manifold Assembly with electronic solenoids.
- Control box with master shut-off switch and switches for right and left burner.
- All necessary hoses cut to length with brass fittings.
- Fuel Strainer.
- 2″ ball hitch and clevis hitch
- Tires – 16″ rim, 27″ overall
GP-750 Vineyard & Orchard Flamer
The GP-750 is our smaller Berm Flamer unit and is designed to hold a 58 gallon tank. It comes with everything you need to start flaming except for the tank. We recommend this unit if your operation is under 40 acres.
The GP-750:
With 58 gallon tank capacity and four LT 2 x 8 torches, the GP-750 is perfect for smaller vineyard and orchard operations or for those needing a smaller unit to fit in between tight rows. Its compact size makes it lightweight and easily pulled behind an ATV or small tractor. Comes standard with a 2″ ball and clevis hitch. The wide floatation tires reduce soil compaction and allow it to be used in a variety of field conditions.
LT 2 x 8 Torches
The GP-750 features (4) LT 2 x 8 Burners.
The LT 2 x 8 Torches output up to 1,150,000 BTU/hr each and produce flames up to 36 inches in length and 18 inches in width. Each torch and its angle are fully adjustable so you can put the flame where you need it. Fuel consumption will range from 11 to 21 gallons an hour depending on settings and conditions.

Always consult your propane dealer about purchasing the proper tank or have them check your existing tank to make sure it is clean and safe before you begin flaming. You MUST use a propane tank equipped with a Liquid Withdrawal Valve. Do NOT use a bottom withdrawal valve as any possible debris or scale may plug torches down the line. We recommend a top-mounted, liquid withdrawal valve with a dip tube which reaches close to, but does not rest on the bottom of the tank. Clean fuel and tank are critical for optimum performance of all flaming equipment.
Vineyard & Orchard Flaming FAQs
Question: Which unit would be best for my operation?
Answer: If you farm over 40 acres we recommend the GP-1000. If you have a small farm under 40 acres or if you have tight row spacing, we recommend the GP-750.
Question: How fast can I travel while flaming?
Answer: With the GP-1000, 5 mph is the maximum. With the GP-750, 3 mph is the maximum.
Question: What is the average fuel consumption per acre?
Answer: You can expect to use between 3 and 6 gallons pre acre depending on the spacing of the berms.
Question: Will flaming damage my vines or trees?
Answer: No, not as long as you keep moving.
Question: Will flaming damage my irrigation lines and sprinkler heads?
Answer: When berms are free of old residue and debris, flaming will not damage irrigation lines, sprinkler heads or vine covers. There is, however, a possibility of damage to irrigation systems and vine shields if your berms contain old residue which could catch fire. If you are going to flame orchards with exposed sprinkler systems or vine shields, keep moving when the torches are burning and clean up the berms throughout the growing season and as needed in the fall to reduce residue.
